Could asteroid/comet detection techniques also be useful in missile defense detection as well?
Just to flesh out the answerer above me, LINEAR (Lincoln Near Earth Asteroid Research), the most prolific of the surveys (run by MIT and the Air Force) use GEODSS (Ground-based electro-optical deep space surveillance) telescopes as used by the military.
